Great Animes to hook your friends into liking Anime

I'm sure you have loads of friends who refuse to just try out anime. The reasons vary from "It's stupid" to "I don't like cartoons." Maybe they had a bad experience from DBZ or Sailor Moon whenever it came on Toonami?

Well I've given it some thought, and I came up with 3 different animes that can be used to hook them in.

First we have Naruto, admittedly a well known anime. It is a good starter anime for those who like violence and need to see that anime is not a "cartoon." Naruto is easy to find and is not too hard to follow, therefore you can jump right into the middle of it or skip around and show them the interesting bits. Naruto has the added bonus of not scaring the faint of heart out of watching anime.

Next we have Ouran High School Host Club, not nearly as well known as Naruto. If you have a friend who loves comedy (preferably a girl, although some boys like it) this might be the one to start off with. I personally converted my friend to anime through this one. Ouran is a short but lovable series.

Last but not least we have Fullmetal Alchemist (the first series). I say the first series because of how much lighter it is than Brotherhood. FMA should be chosen for the friend's that like Philosophical type stuff. It has a great mix of comedy, action, and philosophy that is much beloved by fans. Because of FMA's deep nature, I recommend showing friends episode 13 (Fullmetal vs Flame) to give them a good representation of the characters as well as a good laugh.

Just be careful you don't create a monster that tries to start introducing YOU to stuff YOU have never heard of :D.

I agree, Ouran High School Host Club would make a great "first anime" for the uninitiated. :) I was actually considering loaning it to a friend of mine whose only concept of anime, I just discovered, is Pokemon. :P

Oh dear :P

Most people I know, only know about Pokemon, Yugioh, or Dragonball Z, although there are a few who have sorta seen Naruto and think its retarded.

I am in an anime club at my school and the large majority of them cannot stand Naruto. I think Full Metal Alchemist is a really good place to start with an anime. At least the earlier episodes and I agree that Fullmetal vs. Flame is a great episode.

If you're trying to get a girl to watch anime I agree with the suggestion of Ouran High School Host Club. We watched that in my anime club this last semester and I loved it. Though most of the guys refused to watch it. Fruits Basket is also good, though the voice acting is a little annoying in it.

Anime is a great thing, provided you don't overdo it.
